___________
It was a night not like any others.
On that Friday all seemed calm, beautiful.
The slaves in revolt were all at war in that period.
Time was up for them to choose a symbol to lead them to the final
battles
without having to walk under the old French tricolor.
While in the colony the morbid shadow of that shameful flag
from all ramparts, all garrisons arose,
the Founding-Fathers decided to repudiate
this repugnant one, symbol of death
that kept us slaves without hope.
The coup de grace was going to be given to this evil flag.
All waited religiously to the signal of the great General.
The moment at last arrived on that night without moon.
Nothing suspicious could attract the common attention.
The entire natives erected, bumped up.
They were bound together for this glorious moment.
They came to put an end to the colonial emblem.
While the sky looked at us of its lenient sail,
from the lofty mountains and plains of that proud Arcahaie
everything was well planed in absolute secret for that moment.
Suddenly Dessalines stood up, seized the French flag,
towards Madam Catherine Flon advanced with his fiery eyes.
The Madonna kneeling contemplated the Valiant General
who, of the three-colored flag wanted to ring the toll.
In a sublime gesture, He tore the white from the red and the blue one
putting thus the French flag in crash.
Under the stunned looks of the high Commending Officers,
Dessalines ordered Lady Flon to link them up well strong.
O sublime moment for the Valiant Men of 1803,
historic time for them who faced longsuffering in their struggles.
This new Symbol meant hope, faith in the future,
it constituted the prelude of prowess and of high glories
which would lead from victories to victories the Sublimes
opening the roads for them towards National
lowering thus the arrogance of that ungrateful
In a trait, strange flashes of the sky zigzagged.
With us celebrated all the forces of the sky and of the firmament.
Thus St. Domingue tolled the last breath of the French settlers.
A new page of History was going to be written with blood.
Time has come for the horde of Slaves thirsty of liberty
to proudly walk and fight against the most powerful army on earth.
Black, Mulatto, all those brave warriors united,
animated of the same pride with honor went to the final battle,
the bloodiest and the deadliest one against their former masters
under the shadow of this new oripeau with their souls haughty.
On that night St. Domingue said Farewell to the Marseillaise.
On that
Our two-tone Flag color of blood and of the blue sky swung to the wind.
It meant for all of us the sacred union of Blacks and of Mulattos.
It symbolized the Emblem that took to the final war
the Giants of 1804 under heavy fire of machine-guns and of French atrocities
to the doors of Crète-a-Pierrot, of Butte-Charrier and of Vertières.
18 MAI 1803
