American Revolution and HAITI

1774-1779: St. Domingue was the only Foreign colony (now Haiti) participating in  the war of the independence of the United States of America. The count of Estaing came to the colony to ask the French settlers for help. The French instead sent a contingent of 1,700 black slaves (then free Black men) with Mr. Estaing who fought with honor during the Revolutionary war.

1,700 free Black St. Domingue slaves (now Haitians) were sent by the French to fight alongside the General George Washington at Savannah, GA.  After the independence of the United States most of them returned back to Haiti.

Did you know that the King of the future Kingdom of the North  of Haiti, Henry the First, fought in the war of the Independence of the United States of America and returned victoriously to St.Domingue  as soon as his mission was accomplished?

HAITI & ISRAEL
Nobody knew that the vote of Haiti at the United
Nations gave birth to the state of Israel in 1948.  Israel needed the vote of Haiti to become a nation, the then  ambassador of the Republic of Haiti was absent during the partition vote. He went to Haiti for consultation with the Haitian government before the vote.  President Dumarsais Estime made a great historical decision, he ordered ambassador Joseph D. Charles to cast the final missing vote in favor of the future state of Israel and Israel became a nation.  O......Haiti.......who are you?

Liberation of South America & the Republic of Haiti

Simon José Antonio de la Santisima Trinidad Bolivar y Palacios went to Haiti and asked the Haitians for help in liberating South America from the Spaniards. "Bolivar received help from the Haitian Government under Alexandre Petion for his military campaigns. Petion secretely supplied Bolivar with 4,000 muskets, 15,000 pounds of powder, flints, lead and a printing press. President Petion asked him in return for South America's slaves to be freed. He left Haiti on April 10, 1816 for Venezuela and returned to Les Cayes, Haiti in mid-september 1816 to request fore more help from the Haitians.

President Alexandre Petion secretely resupplied him with arms after the war of Independence of Haiti . He left the City of les Cayes on December 28, 1816 and he successfully liberated Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Chili, Colombia, Venezuela etc... "Despite the crucial logistical support from Haiti, Bolivar never recognized the Independence of the Republic of Haiti".

One of his predecessors in the liberation struggle from colonialism in Spanish ruled South America, Francisco de Miranda, created the first Venezuelan flag in Jacmel, South East of Haiti.

Anchored in the Bay of Jacmel, Miranda first raised the flag of Venezuela on March 12, 1806 there on the corvette LEANDER. This day is still celebrated as FLAG DAY in Venezuela". (The Louverture Project). (Flag of Venezuela's colors: Yellow, Blue and Red).

Did you know that "by 1851 Haiti's import from the United States of America surpassed in value those of Mexico, and U.S. trade with Haiti was greater in volume than U.S. commerce with most Latin America countries"?

Did you know that the United States of America recognized the Republic of Haiti as an Independent Nation only in 1862?    Why?

"Because of the Union's need for cotton and other goods from Haiti with the increase of the Civil War and the strong movement against slavery which emphasized the desirability of formal contacts". (Haiti-State Against Nation by Michel Rolph Trouillot).

Guantanamo Releases

During the years 1991 & 1992 our church received 379 brothers and sisters released from the U. S. Jail in Guantanamo, Cuba. While nobody wanted them, we opened widely our doors and sheltered them. Without a penny and without any help whatsoever we cared for them and their children.

While an other well-known organization abandoned them and they hit the streets, day and night great people like sister Yveline Poulard, Edy Poulard), Gerard Gaspard, Rev. Jean-Renaud Guillaume and his wife Marie-Andree, Arnell  Pradel & his wife Marie, Fritz Leon, Theard Emile, Jean-Claude Love, Pascal Voltaire and wife Ersula, Mr. Gabriel Richard, Mr. Widzer Desrosiers, Clélie Voltaire, Pastor Rockliffe Joseph, attorneys Neil Franzen and Sheila Neville fought harshly for their rights in providing them with the best services they could at the I.N.S and the department of social services (DPSS).

FGACOG congratulates and thanks very much these wonderful people for their courage and their generosity. Most of these Haitian people are working now in different areas and sections of Los Angeles County mainly at the Los Angeles International Airport. Don't be surprised to hear when you arrive at LAX: "Koumanman! Sak pasé! Nap boulé! Wi-foutt! They are employed at all terminals.  (posted by Negibo d'Haiti)

According to WIKIPEDIA, "MARABOU is a term of Haitian origin denoting multiracial ethnicity. The term describes the offspring of a person of mixed race: Black African/European and Amerindian, specifically the native TAINO, born in HAITI (formerly St.Domingue). The continuing importation of thousands of enslaved Africans under the French and Spanish diluted the generations of so called "MARABOUS" over the decades. Today most of Haitians of Amerindian descent are assumed also to have African Ancestry".

THE STRUGGLES OF THE HAITIAN PEOPLE

Some people try to undermine the Haitian People. Their ignorance of the historical facts of the tribulations of these great folks made them blind and they think that the Haitian People because of their poverty are finished and eliminated from the face of the world.  Poverty is not a sin and a condemnation. It is a state not wanted which falls over the unfortunates heads.

During the course of our History we faced a lot of ostrascisms which created a kind of madness, histery,  and hypocritical misunderstanding of the Haitian character by the medias and  certain foreign nations hostile to the Republic of Haiti.

To understand the phenomenon,  we emphasize our dire on the facts that Haiti was colonized and occupied by many forces (the Spanish, the French, the English, the Americans and the United Nations) which did not respect the Haitian Sovereignty.  Why?

We are the First Black Independent Republic of the New World. We have made some people mad against us because we fought for Justice, Liberty and Equality of all men and women created by God and we become victims of our arrogance by fighting the French, the English and the Spanish putting them out of our land and created A Free Negro State which was considered like a provocation and a danger for others since slavery was their main interest in bulking their economical productivity of free labor and mainmise of their super power over others.

The Haitian Forefathers like Toussaint Louverture (arrested by the French), Jean-Jacques Dessalines, Henry Christophe, Alexandre Petion were seen by the powers as the polluters and the troublemakers in forging a BLACK REPUBLIC in America.

Before the Independence of Haiti, on December 5, 1492 Christopher Columbus and the Spaniards discovered Haiti (name given by the Indians which meant "HIGH LAND"), they conquerred the Island in the Name of the King & the Queen of Spain. They named it Hispaniola or Little Spain. They met with the Indigenous People which they called Indians because of their skin color of copper, they thought that they have landed in some roads leading them towards India. They forced these peaceful and gracious people to hard labor in putting them to dig for gold, precious metals and laboring the land. The poor Indians knew the miserable conditions of slavery. The Indians died little by little until their extinction. Then came the French. In 1502 France began the Traffic of the Negroes from Africa. The first Black Men landed in St.Domingue (now Haiti) as slaves. All the riches and wealth of the new discovered Island was either transported to Spain during the Spanish Occupation and to France during the colonization. "The entire island remained under Spanish control for over 200 years".

The news of a Golden Paradise found in the Caribbean circulated all  over Europe. Scores of Filibusters, Pirates, Corsairs pilled towards the Caribbean Sea where a war of galleons raged for the Golden Fleece of  JAZON.  The Caribbean Sea became the theater of the conquistadores wars in which French , Spanish, English outlaws without mercy engaged themselves in a course to dominate the scene to a no-man's-land to the greater forces.

"In 1697 the Western third part St.Domingue (now Haiti) was given to France under the Ryswick treaty, and the other 2/3 (Hispaniola)to the Spanish. In the year 1797 the entire island was transferred under French control in accordance with the treaty of Basle. But the French control did not last for too long ".

The English settled in the South(Jeremie) and the Nothwestern parts (Mole St.Nicolas)of St.Domingue. The English had made a secret pact with the Spanish to definitely cast out the French from the Island  and they arranged to divide the French colony among themselves, the English to take the South part and the Spanish in the North.  The wealth created by the sugar industry and the gold mines made St.Domingue threatened with the threat of the English and the Spaniards occupations. A war of supremacy and of belligerants began between the French, the English, and the Spaniards.

Then came Toussaint L'Ouverture to the Scene. "Toussaint was born in St.Domingue in 1743. Toussaint belonged to the small, fortunate class of slaves employed by humane masters as personal servants. He was a house servant and a coachman. He received the tutelage that helped him become one of the few literate Black Revolutionary Leaders. He learned strategic and tactical planning in reading the works of Julius Caesar and others and innate leadership ability brought him quickly to prominance. His star began to shine because of his intelligence and his ability to control the events in joining the forces of Jean Francois & Biassou. In April 1793 Le Cap fell to French forces who were reinforced by thousands of Black fighters but Jean Francois & Biassou refused to join the French forces. They believed that allegiance to a king would be more secure than allegiance to the Republic. They accepted commissions from Spain.....by meantime tropical disease decimated the English forces far more quickly than fighting the French. Toussaint still serving under the Spanish banner made a decision on May 6, 1794 that sealed the fate of a nation. After arranging for his family to flee the city of Santo Domingo, Toussaint changed and pledged his support to France. France National Assembly decided on February 4, 1794 to abolish slavery appears to have been the strongest influence over Toussaint's actions while the Spanish although they promised Emancipation showed no real signs of keeping their word in the territories that they controlled. The British on their side had reinstated slavery in the areas they occupied. Toussaint became the Genial Precursor of the Independence of the future Nation. He served under the Spanish, the English and the French banners.

In March 1796, Toussaint rescued the French Commander , General Etienne-Maynard Lavaud, from a mulatto-led effort to depose him as the primary colonial authority. To express his gratitude, Lavaud appointed Toussaint Lieutenant Governor General of St.Domingue. A new group of French Commissioners appointed Toussaint Commander in Chief of all French forces on the island. After that, racial animosities drove events in St.Domingue as Toussaint's Black forces clashed with Rigaud's mulatto army in the South. Then foreign intrigues and manipulation prevailed on both sides. Toussaint had the brilliant idea to enter in correspondence with the United States President John Adams. Toussaint pledged to the United States that " in exchange for support He would deny the French the use of St.Domingue as a base for operations in North America".  John Adams , the Leader of an Independent, but still insecure nation found the arrangement desirable and dispatched arms and ships that greatly aided the Black forces in St.Domingue referred as the WAR OF THE CASTES. Rigaud with his forces and ambitions were crushed and fled the colony in 1800.  In 1801, a Constitution approved by the Colonial Assembly of St.Domingue granted Toussaint the title of  Governor-General-for life, giving him all effective powers as well as the privilege of choosing his successor. Toussaint with his powers became a danger and some concerns  for Britain and the United States, governments of slaves-holding nations. The First Consul of France Napoleon Bonaparte became agitated and resented the temerity of the former slaves who planned to govern a nation on their own. Moreover Bonaparte regarded St.Domingue as essential to potential French exploitation of the Louisiana Territory in the United States...............  Toussaint was cowardly seized and arrested by the French and transported to France, where he died of neglect in the frigid dungeon of Fort de Joux in the Jura Mountains on April 7, 1803" ......

"The betrayal of Toussaint and Bonaparte's restoration of slavery in Martinique undermined the collaboration of leaders such as Dessalines, Christophe and Petion who were convinced that the same fate lay in store for St.Domingue, these commanders and others turned against France. They organized and fought the colonial army led by Leclerc who died of yellow fever in November 1802 and replace by the ferocious General Donatien Rochambeau. The Black insurgents fought the French Army sent by Bonaparte.  So began the war for the Independence of Haiti, one of the most glorious and bloodiest wars won by the Slaves of St.Domingue over their masters on November 18, 1803. The French forces were defeated.  The French General Rochambeau fled to Jamaica the same november 1803 where He surrendered to the British authorities rather than face the retribution of the rebel leadership in St.Domingue. Dessalines and the generals named the Country: HAITI and on January 1, 1804 they signed the Act of the Independence of the new Nation, and HAITI became the First Black Independent Nation of the World.

All St.Domingue's wealth and riches were sent and brought to Europe.

The General Jean-Jacques Dessalines was sacred Emperor of the new Nation and was assassinated on October 17, 1806. Henri Christophe became the King of the North and Petion the President in the South. After the death of Petion and Christophe, Jean-Pierre Boyer became the President of Haiti. The Dominicans came and offerred Haiti to protect their country by fears of Spain's reprisals. President Jean-Pierre Boyer took over the Dominican Republic for 21 years.  When arrived at the doors of Santo Domingo, the Dominicans came to receive him and the Haitian Army with flowers and songs and all the bells of the cathedrals of the cities tolled;  the Dominicans cried loudly: "Viva Boyer el Libertador de nuestro pais".  HAITI NOW HAS BECOME THE PROTECTOR OF THE OPPRESSED, THE WEEK AND THE DESPERATE NATIONS IN QUEST OF LIBERTY. And France regretted Haiti. They used the diplomacy of fear? What diplomacy???

Charles X, the king of France  menaced the country in 1825 by an Ordinance that the Haitians should pay their former masters or to face an other war if the Haitians did not pay them "the debt of the Independence. They claimed that the Republic of Haiti owed them at that time one hundred fifty million (150,000.000) French francs in gold which is today the equivalent of Twenty-four billion of U.S dollars (U.S $24,000,000,000.00). President Boyer to avoid a confrontation, (what confrontation? huumm), consented in the name of the Republic to pay the ransom to France. And Haiti gave its last treasures to the French in cash. Finally in 1838 France recognized Haiti as a full Independent Country.

Now it is very sad to hear the international news media sing and trumpet all over the world that Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere...What an irony?  Which created it? And every time we open our mouths to talk and explain the circumstances that caused the misery and the poverty of the Haitian People, we have been shut-up. See it and say it, that since December 5, 1492 to Present: Quisqueya, Bohio, Hispaniola, St.Domingue, Haiti face the same problems like colonizations, occupations, trusteeships, coup d'états, treasons and name them... Major Tropical storms, hurricanes at the rate of 3 yearly have devastated the whole infrastructure of the country. The people with the few they possessed are obliged to rebuild every time these disaster hit. To demonize the Haitian people, a campaign of destabilization and of character assassination were instigated by their ennemies. They are still fighting miseries, poverty and negligence with dignity since they have nothing.

So poverty is a state  not a crime or a degradation of the human being. Who provoke it then?  Spain, France, England even the USA occupations or colonizations?  Think about it. Haitians deserve their full respect and treatment by the international intelligentia and "manipulateurs" which did not know our full history. We are not so foolish as many think we are. We intend to live in peace with everybody.  Please give Haiti a chance, give us a break in the 21st Century. We have nothing now to give but we are a nation of courageous people victimized by the course of history,  we're full of decent character and dignity, very peaceful, rich in human resources walking with an eternal embargo on our shoulders. God only knows why.  God bless you.

Most of our Countrymen are talking about the Ex-President Bill Clinton as the new Head of State of Haiti. No. President Clinton was named by the General Secretary of the United Nations as SPECIAL ENVOY to Haiti.  The President of Haiti is Mr. Rene Garcia Preval democratically elected by the People, and the Chief of the Government is Mrs. Michele Pierre-Louis the Prime Minister. Mr. Clinton has nothing to do with the internal structures of the Haitian Government. Haiti is a free, independent, a democratic Republic.
